The Torah Fund originally helped us acquire and "dress" our Sefer Torah scroll. Funds continue to be needed to help us maintain it in reasonable condition and make any essential repairs to the parchment so that it can be handled. Our Torah scroll dates back to the early 19th-century (C.E.) and is one of more than 1500 scrolls that were rescued from a warehouse in Prague in 1963, twenty-five years after Kristallnacht and the Nazi occupation. The scroll had suffered damage over time and was repaired by the Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust at Westminster Synagogue in London. It came to our community in August 1993. It is fragile, and although at this time it is not considered a kosher scroll, it needs to be maintained in good condition so that it can continue to be used by members of our Congregation. The Torah Fund is funded by direct contributions and by donations by bar & bat mitzvah parents and others. An eventual additional phase of the Torah restoration will be to kasher the Torah by making all the words legible, but first we want to make any necessary repairs to the parchment so that it can be handled. The Torah Fund is funded by direct contributions and by donations by bar & bat mitzvah parents. Making a contribution to the Torah Fund is an excellent way to honor a loved one or special event or celebrate a simchah.
