Her Name

by Suzanne Sadowsky

For my granddaughter, Sadie Raizel Elizabeth Carter, born at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in San Francisco on May 9, 2002 at 8:48 PM PDT …and for her parents, Heather Richardson and Joshua Carter.

Brand new.
Imagine — here you are.
Who would have thought that you would come to us
Just as you are?
A new being, completely whole,
Awesome, without precedence.
A once-in-a-lifetime, unique combination
Of DNA, genes, molecules, protoplasm
And God knows what else.

Here you are
To greet us and offer us
All of your surprises. Your royal selfness.
A Jewish princess, the daughter of a King,
A new child of the Source, the Essence —
All the words we choose to call the unnameable,
The name that is a secret,
The unnameable name.
HaShem

The world has never seen one just like you before.
You are here, now,
A new traveller on this finite section of an infinite journey,
Another person to hear and tell the stories
Of what we remember
Of the ones who came before us.
And then … to add the secrets of your heart …
I love you, Sadie Rai.
