The בִּרְכּוֹת הַתּוֹרָה Birkot Hatoràh, Torah Blessings, are chanted before and after each עַלייָה ‘Aliyàh, ascent of honorees, of the קְרִיאַת הַתּוֹרָה Qri’at Hatoràh Torah reading in a Torah Service.
Immediately before reading from the Torah, the leaders, consisting of all the honorees gathered on the בִּמָה bimà, stage, as well as the בַּעַל קְרִיאָה ba‘al qri’àh, the reading expert — the person actually chanting from the Torah, call on the congregation to bless the Giver of the Torah. The congregation responds with a brief blessing, which the leaders repeat and follow with a longer pre-reading blessing. Immediately after reading from the Torah, the leaders then recite the post-reading blessing.
