The text of הֲשִּׁיבֵֽנוּ Hashivénu is verse 5:21 of אֵיכָה ’Éichàh Lamentations, traditionally but disputedly attributed to the prophet יִרְמְיָהוּ Yirmiyàhu Jeremiah during the reign of the Babylonian king נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּר Nebuchadnezzar II.
This hauntingly beautiful melody, a square round for 3 voices, was composed to this text by Meir Ben-Uri (1908…), an Israeli architect, composer, and copper-plate engraver, born Maximilian Vasbotzky in Riga, Latvia.
הֲשִּׁיבֵֽנוּ Hashivénu is traditionally sung as part of the liturgy during the High Hol y Days. In some congregations, the song is also included in the liturgy just before replacing the Torah in the Ark during regular weekly Torah services.
