The text of מַה־טֹּֽבוּ Mah Tovu comes from פָּרָשַׁת בָּלָק Pàràshat Bàlàq in the Torah [Numbers 24:5], wherein בִּלְעָם Bil'am (Balaam), a pagan prophet hired by בָּלָק Bàlàq (Balak) to curse the Israelites, praises them instead. The melody is derived from an ancient Slavic harvest round, known in the English-speaking world as "Hey, Ho, Nobody Home."
