Mah-Yàfèh Hayom (How Beautiful Today Is) is often sung as a welcoming song before a Shabbat service.

The song was composed by Issachar Miron (1920…), the prominent Polish-American composer, poet, educator, filmmaker, and photographer.

In this fugal SATB arrangement, the alto carries the original melody throughout, and in each section the other voices enter on nearby notes one measure at a time. Near the end of the piece, a brief darkening of the mood by an incursion of the subdominant key is quickly repulsed to return to the thoroughly pleasant tone of the melody, as if to remind us that keeping the Sabbath is an act of will.

Note that the small noteheads are only sung on the second pass.
